Re: [APML] Astrophotography 2004 - Price Shock Horror

Hello Chris,

It's easy to get sucked into thinking that to take the best CCD images
you need the ultimate equipment ... there's a person on the CCD list who
shoots with a C8 and a Starlight Express camera who routinely produces
images that blows away anything that I ever did with film on the same
objects ... the new technology does not have to cost an arm and a leg ...
just a leg ...

Seriously, the "progress" that CCD has made over film is incorporated
into almost any CCD device ... it is mostly the skill of the practitioner
that will make the ultimate difference in the quality of the image.

Sure ... wouldn't it be nice to have the ultimate mount etc etc etc but
I am still putzing along with the 12" Schaefer that I have used since 1988
... they go for about $2500 used now ... not a GOTO mount so all that
tracking precision and stability have become a second rate option ... I have
to manually find my object ... horrors!

It's not as bleak as it seems ...

            Tony
