Nice job---I don't think to old swivel joint was such a monster (even
if a "real" ball joint is more convenient). The old wooden job looks
like a pretty clever job to me....

Hmmm, why? Do you have the finder well aligned? The trick is to
point it at something during the daytime---anything at all, but it
should be as far off in the distance as is practical to avoid
parallax. Now rotate the hinge. If the object in the finder cross
hairs stays in the cross hairs (obviously, it rotates), then the
finder is aligned with the hinges.

Try blowing on the less with a hairdryer between shots. The idea is
to gently warm it just a bit, and the dew will stay away for quite
while unless conditions are *really* wet.
