[APML] Celestron C5-S vs. G8
I've got a small cache of cash built up, and I have been carefully looking
for an affordable, yet decent telescope that has photo potential.
I read an older review in Sky & Telescope JUN 99 issue about the G5. The
reviewer had many good things to say about the scope's performance (but an
unusually long cool down time if moved between temp extremes) and labeled it
as a great value for the money. I've found similar opinions elsewhere on the
web.
I decided to go for it. I guess the current model is now called the C5-S and
is on the sturdier CG5 mount from the G3 mount the original G5 was on, yes?
Today I have got word back that the C5-S is backordered and I have some
options. Wait and have the backorder filled, or... they've offered me a G-8
on a CG-5 mount with stainless steel legs (rather than aluminum) for a
slight discount over the original new C5-S package.
Any opinions on these scopes? Portability wasn't as much a concern as
overall price when I started looking at these, but after placing my order, I
noted that the 5" has some value in being easy to transport around.
