I have not found the 180 Nikkor 2.8 to require separate rings, my Bogen
ball-head supports it nicely from the camera's socket. Longer, larger
lenses certainly would require support out in front and Losmandy rings are a
standard:
http://www.losmandy.com/ I use the 125 mm Losmandy rings and they are a
good size for most of the larger lenses.
Other companies (eg, Milburn) also make rings; check google.
