I don't know your exact light pollution conditions, but I bet that, yes, 
you *do* need the IDAS. I had the opportunity to verify this recently. Just 
a few days before receiving my IDAS, weather was excellent at my location, 
with exceptional transparency and LVM of about 5.5.  I did three 60 min. 
shots of M81 with the 12" LX200 at F/7 without filter from my backyard, 
which were completely ruined by light pollution. I can post one of these 
images if you want. Don't doubt, always use the IDAS.
