Bill,

 No, it does not preclude using color film. If you used color film, the rather short FL of this camera at 500mm will be limited by the resolution of the film. So your images will be not too different from say that of an AP Traveller at 600mm FL with 6x7 color film. There are many people who have done a lot of good work with APO refractors on medium format film. I am presuming you want to do better than this. So if you use color film, I say "why bother" because you're just reproducing similar images to many which have been done for the last 15 years.
