Re: [APML] OT:Astrophoto Contest Rules and Categories

Hi Thom:
The San Francisco Amateur Astronomers (SFAA) has a long-standing annual
contest that previously was for photos only but has now been expanded to
have a category for nonphoto astro-art. Judging is by all the members who
view the entries at the December meeting.
The rules for photos are very simple: not more than 3 entries per contestant
and prints to be 11x14 or less in size. Mounted or unmounted is optional. No
separate divisions for film vs ccd or slides (I've never seen a slide
entered as such).
The rules for nonphoto astroart are also simple: any creative effort
representing astronomical objects or processes and "reasonable" in size. In
the last contest I entered a flat cake frosted with what I thought was a
very artistic spiral galaxy (swirls of vanilla and chocolate frosting). The
judges did not award me a prize (8-( , but the cake got eaten (8-). . There
were several mobiles entered with the planets, and first prize was won by a
mirror frame with 3D astro people peering up with binoculars. Quite well
done.
The prizes for both events are nicely designed star-shaped paper weights
engraved with the winner's name, date, etc, for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
In the photo division (my real interest), I have lobbied for separate
divisions by print size (up to 8x10, over 8x10) because I think that raw
size does have some effect on the impression an image makes on the viewer.
However, the club has not changed its rules, so size doesn't matter (in this
instance, anyway).
Hope this helps.
Bert
