Don,
I have had eyes look back at me in the dark but I think they were
just deer. I have seen bob cats up there in the daylight but not in the evening.
I guess it's too dark for me to really tell what it is in the dark. Yes, I try
to make a quite bit of noise when I walk about. Don't want to surprise one of
these animals. I think a lion or bobcat is so silent that I would not even know
it was around.

Loke,
I've seen large cat tracks where I observe on Mt
Laguna (Morris Ranch area) over the past few years, in the soft earth when the
snow melts. Last year I saw the reflection of my red flashlight in the
eyes of a cat about 50 ft away. We kept looking at each other for about
3 minutes until he went away. I'm guessing it was a bobcat, at least it
was smaller than a mountain lion. I heard his screams before and after
seeing him as he moved along the ridge.
I play music and talk with fellow observers
through the night to let anything out there know that people are
there.

Tony,
I walk around Mt Laguna at night to my scope and have been
told that there are lions here as well. I have seen what appears to be their
tracks in the day time. A few years ago a jogger in the more
residential area 30 miles north was eaten by one of these beasts. Maybe the
way to deal with them is to make some noise so you don't surprise
them.

And having company is
great... there have been confirmed mountain lion sightings behind my house
lately... I feel like a giant steak walking from the house to the
observatory... major flashlight and gun environment...
Tony
