Prime lenses (i.e. fixed focal length vs. zoom) are always better than lens + teleconverter.  Teleconverters were invented for the starving artist trying to buy equipment and put himself through college at the same time.  Teleconverters are cheap enough to get you started.  Then, if you're really hungry for that extra magnification, you can buy that 300mm f/4 you've had your eyes on for so long;-)
