Re: [APML] Camera Lens Skylight Filters

Hi All

I'm thinking of piggybacking a SLR on my scope to take some wide angle constellation
shots while photographing through the telescope.

Most of my lenses have skylight filters attached (mainly to protect the lenses).

Should these be removed for astro photography or is it OK to just leave them on.

Thanks
Eddie Guscott

I would leave them on to trim down blue halos around stars.  Unless you have some terrific lenses, they will likely have some chromatic aberration.  With color film, there is not much you can do for that other than stop the lens down a little and use a filter that cuts out the excess blue.  You need some blue to maintain a real color, but anything you can get rid of in the violet end of the spectrum will help the star images.
