Chris,

Jerry's method is very good indeed.  I have used it for years and use it 
for all images.  I believe it's on his web site.  It's become so intuitive 
that I haven't looked at the instructions for years.  I have adapted it a 
little over time.

Matt has a very interesting method which which I keep meaning to dig into 
more deeply - I believe it could be powerful for removing colour as well as 
density gradients.
