I liked your article; sorry I didn't have it handy to remember the
reference and give you credit.
But there is always a median filter. I don't think Photoshop has one,
but AIP4WIN or IRIS (free) does. You do have to convert your image to
separate FITS files for each of the color layers, but I don't consider
that a big deal.
The biggest drawback of the median filter is that is it slow compared
to a gaussian blur, but that's what coffee and web browsers are made
for :-)
