However, my points are:
1. That hand-drawn layer is near-optimal for that image.
2. Given any automated AV method that anyone might seriously propose, can a good case be made that the method would generate a layer like that one?

Until the answer to question #2 becomes "yes", I assert that only manual methods can be optimal.
