Another suggestion I've heard is to dab the LED with a black marker (Sharpie). I remember the first time I used the Meade 9mm reticle eyepiece for manual guiding; my night vision was ruined in one eye for about 20 minutes afterward.

   Another good trick is to paint the LED with red nail polish... you can add layers of it until you have it "just right".
