Hi Scott,
It sounds like you remember some of my posts regarding
the ST-4. It and I never got along well. I ended up
selling it and going back to my 201XT. Still working
fine.

I've guided off-axis for before, (on the LX200) once
in awhile I still do; lack of guide star, etc...
This mount tracks well, I'm expecting to have to make
a correction only every few minutes. To this point
I've had no way to make corrections on the 85, and my
results from the past year indicate serious trailing
starts after 15-20 minutes.
