[APML] [Very OT] Online auction reliability?

Dear all,
sorry for this off-topic post, but I just couldn't help it. I saw
many threads where some of you talk about buying and selling stuff on
eBay. Now, while I would generally trust fellow APMLers (for I suppose
most people wouldn't want their reputation to be eventually ruined),
I would tend not to make any deal with completely unknown peoples. 
Who assures me I'm not gonna be taken for a ride?

As long as it's books, music and stuff like that, that's OK (I made 
myself several online purchases, most of which overseas), but when it 
comes to very delicate and complex gear like AP telescopes... I may 
sound narrow-minded but I would like to touch them with my very hands!

I don't mean to start any flame war whatsoever, just curious.
