Re: [APML] Floodlights at Ayers Rock?
Bert,
I was at Ayers Rock just over two years ago, there is really nothing
there other than the resort. It is no longer posible to enter the
campground at night to observe, and the resort itself does have a lot of
lighting. However, I made friends with the local resident astronomer and
another gentleman who ran a dinner/star party for guests. They arranged
permission for me to access a fire truck trail and so I observed from a
site along there, about 10km out. Amazingly dark, the resort was in the
west (no visible lighting), and the rock was just east of due South.
I was there at the start of April, the Crux/Carina Milky-Way was
overhead early evening and Scorpius was overhead just before dawn.
Truely amazing.
The resort is pricey, but worth it IMHO. Go there if you get the chance.
regards
David
