I can certainly agree with Stecker on the weather issue. Chile would be much
dryer. We were in Coonabarabran in March. We had maybe 2 really good
nights. Monsoon the rest of the time. At one point I was filming through a
ground fog. Our best night visual was mag 6.7 by my 40 something eyes.
Nothing quite like the bulk of the Milky Way overhead.
Based upon the weather records kept at the AAT, the last two years have had
the least amount of clear sky in many decades. I think however that you
would be able to do much better in the southern hemisphere. With IC 4628
near the zenith you would be able to expose much deeper. That entire field
is loaded with nebulosity and dark stuff.
