Hello Scott:
I do not hyper my Kodak PPF film and get excellent results. My exposure
times are 35 minutes at f/5.6, 45 minutes at f/6 and 55 minutes at f/7.
Actually, the unhypered PPF has slightly more red sensitivity and contrast than
the hypered PPF. The only advantage I see in hypering PPF is for blue objects
like galaxies and I do not think you will be photographing too many galaxies
with your telephoto lenses. Take a look at my web site and you will see that
almost all of the color photos are with unhypered film. Unfortunately, moisture
in the atmosphere above the ground and low elevation can also result in poor
results. Purging the camera or using hypered film will not solve these
problems.
