I think it is a bit drastic to refer to the Orion Short Tube as garbage for
astrophotography. It depends on your expectations.

More experienced astrophotographers shouldn't discourage beginners with
less than the best equipment from taking that first step with what they
have. As a beginner myself, I found encouragement in finding that people
like Chris Vedeler, Alfredo Garcia, Alan Miller and others have used the
short tube with some level of success. 

In using it myself, I obtained some photos which inspire me to go on. And
yes, I also now have valuable first hand experience with vignetting, field
edge distortion, cropping as necessary etc. 

As time goes on, I plan to invest in top quality equipment in pursuit of
high quality astrophotos, but in my opinion the Short Tube can serve the
beginner well.
