Not anymore. Nikon recently lowered the price of its model 4500
scanner (scans up to 4" x 5" film) to $5500, and Olympus just
introduced a scanner which scans APS, 35mm and medium format (up
to 6cm x 9cm) for under $3000. There are also some combination
flatbed & film scanners which do a very good job on larger film
sizes. (I don't mean scanning transparencies on a flatbed, as
some used to, but flatbed scanners with special film trays for
direct film scanning). Some of those scanners, such as the
Olympus, scan medium and large format at a lower dot resolution
than 35mm, but that is usually acceptable for most larger film
uses.
