Hi Alan,
I'm no Photoshop expert, but [- how many times have you heard that
opening proviso?! -] maybe you need to ease off the curves correction a
bit? The stars are still coming out apparently "quantised" into three
distinct brightness levels, instead of a gradual fade to black from a
central bright peak. I may be wrong, but I think that overdoing curves
can cause this stepped effect. It is understandable that the stars might
go awry if you are mainly focusing on the nebula while making the PS
corrections.
