My 4870 works very well, too! I didn't find any scanner noise up to now, 
apart from the fact that I always scan the slide twice and then everage 
them. The problem with the colour shift usually might arise if you leave 
some place of the flatbed transparent to light. Try to put a black 
cartoon around the slide you scan and I believe you'll see your problems 
disappear.
