Yea, I have to take off my glasses and move back and squint, and even then 
it seems like there is about a 30 percent variability in what I can detect 
in terms of accuracy.

If you really want to nail it accurately, the only way to go is hardware 
calibration.

There's other stuff that can go wrong here too, I just read a post from a 
guy who was having problems because his video card's software was loading 
some kind of profile on top of the OS one.  I know there were some previous 
versions of ColorSync that didn't work either. Not that I've heard anything 
wrong with the one you're using.

There are other third party software calibration programs for the mac, you 
might want to try one just to get another data point.
