that's a very beautiful image, Jason
I had similar halo problems due to a potentially defective [SII] filter.
Here's how I fixed them with photoshop:

Basically I used the elliptical marquee to select the entire bloomed region.
then used feather to a pretty big radius (10-15 pixels), then used the
curves on the red channel to back off the gamma for that channel. Then i
selected just the stars using the same tool, feathered to 5 pixel radius,
then used the curves tool on the red channel to restore the gamma for the
star.
then i used the sponge tool with about 50% to smooth any areas in the
transition zone that had clear delineation
have a look at the before and after. Maybe I can live with this filter after
all. It didn't take long to do the fix on the entire image.
