Not sure.  It sounds like they both plan on staying there to image on a regular basis so I don't know why it wouldn't be more permanent...

Not why, because he built a permanent structure in a relatively close but still dark location,
but why not make the building a usable observatory (roll off?) with permanent piers?
Yes, the aluminum pallet mounts and pallet jack is an ingeneous idea for moving the big mounts and scopes, but it still means they have to move them out on the pad, align and drift test them.
I don't think seurity is the issue, as it's located on a private ranch.
Sure, building a large roll off is probably more envolved than the garage-like structure they built, but in the long run, being able to drive up, roll the roof off and turn the power on to get those CCD's cooling is a more relaxing solution.
Each to his own.

What am I missing?
