That and the expense of building a full
fledged roll-off observatory vs. a sturdy storage shed...joe

Maybe they wanted to stay warm in the bldg while the scopes operate at
ambient temp :)

Looks like one of the masters of film imaging, George
Greaney, went CCD several years ago. Also, he's designed a unique
way of having an observatory but not installing the scope/mount on a
fixed pier...... Check it

AFAIK I don't think he's on
any of the mailing lists......

Chris et
al: That is an interesting approach..........but why??? Not why,
because he built a permanent structure in a relatively close but still dark
location, but why not make the building a usable observatory (roll off?)
with permanent piers? Yes, the aluminum pallet mounts and pallet jack is
an ingeneous idea for moving the big mounts and scopes, but it still means
they have to move them out on the pad, align and drift test them. I don't
think seurity is the issue, as it's located on a private ranch. Sure,
building a large roll off is probably more envolved than the garage-like
structure they built, but in the long run, being able to drive up, roll the
roof off and turn the power on to get those CCD's cooling is a more relaxing
solution. Each to his own.
What am I missing?
