There are two palettes I commonly use. One is the
"Hubble palette" which is nothing more than assigning the longest wavelength to
Red , next longest to Green and so on.
The other one I use is what I call the CFHT
palette, which assigns Ha to Red and [OIII] to Green (sort of the "expected"
colors). The odd one out, [SII] goes to blue.
I usually use the Hubble palette for nearly
everything, but for some reason to me the CFHT palette looks better on the
Veil.
I actually used both for the Veil so you can decide
for yourself. This shot was from the summer of 2003 when I was starting to get
rolling with the narrowband filters.
One of the key things I do to get "interesting"
colors is to push the histograms of each channel so that they are of similar
intensity. If I don't do that the Ha usually will dominate the image. Not
always, but most of the time.

Hey Chris, how are you faring with the fires? I saw
some footage from Payson yesterday on TV and it looks bad to me. I hope you and
your observatories are out of the threat.
Best
