Welcome to APML
You are off to a great start and will improve with practice.
You can use the settings you have and take good shots by aiming at the North Pole and letting the earth rotate around the camera for several hours @ f8 or so, on a tripod. The best thing to do of course is to have a foreground object to rotate around......a mountain like here http://www.pbase.com/image/3452726
or a ETX-90 on a tripod out in the distance, a cactus etc............
In the photo I submitted you can see the Milky Way. This was taken in July of 2002 and you can see the skyglow from the morning sun and the photo was taken at approx. 1 am.
Time and practice is your best friend, studying will help too
