         With great difficulty and great patience.  Unsharp masking is a 
very similar technique, BTW.

         I only treid it a couple of times, but I used first an oversized 
negative carrier - say 120 for 35mm - so I could rotate one strip of film 
as compared to another, and then you used very high magnification  - I ahve 
a coupelf o profesisonal jeweller's loupes - to align 
everything.   Aligningment wasn't all that bad, but keepign alignment while 
you taped the negatives in place - ah, that was the "magic" part of it for me.
