[APML] sprintscan s45 film holders

There have been numerous Sprintscan 45 scanners offered on eBay recently 
for around $700 for new units.  Can anyone comment on whether antinewton 
glass is needed for the 6x7cm film holder to get a scan that is in focus 
across the entire frame?  Also, do 35mm negatives need to be cut down to 
a single frame for scanning?  If so, how difficult is it to center the 
negative in the film holder?
