Thanks. Actually for here in Iowa, winter is about the only time we usually 
don't see the aurora.   Maybe you're thinking of all those great aurora 
shots from Alaska or other northern latitudes where there's always snow and 
ice somewhere!  They never see much up there in the summer because of the 
constant daylight.
