Jeff, I get my film developed at a 1-hour lab at a local drugstore. I've sort of trained them, but they have a high turnover of employees. So, to avoid disasters, besides giving them "do no cut" instructions, I just wait around for the developed film to come out of the machine. It usually takes no more than 20 minutes. It's well worth it to make sure the bored 17-year-old operating the machine doesn't do something dumb with the exposures that I've driven hundreds of miles and spent hours and hours taking.
I think the worst thing they ever did with my developed film was roll it up tight and stick it into a plastic film canister. Then I had lots and lots of scratches to deal with.
