I guess I'm just lucky in this area. After i gave up getting my film
developed and printed at Bi-Mart (too many screwups, but they were
cheaper), I found a local (in Medford, about 15 miles away) camera
store. I explained what I wanted: normal developing, print for a dark
background. After a few re-tries, they have been getting it right for
about 5 years now.
One thing I did do that was maybe a little unusual was writing a letter
to the owner praising his employees for how hard they worked to get
things right. That letter still is posted right next to the cash
register. When I walk in they know who I am and what is on my film. I
think they even fight over who's going to work on it because they love
seeing what I do. Once in awhile, I see a new employee and I make sure
to tell him or her that "this is a roll of astrophotos". There has
never been a mistake after the first few weeks. I do try to take a
normal daylight exposure to start the roll, this helps them get things
lined up, but even now I sometimes forget and still they get it right.
I really think that finding a reliable processor is one of the biggest
hurdles to overcome in this hobby. After that, the only human error to
overcome is our own. :-)
