Yes, but prior to about 10 years ago it was much worse for churches as
they technically needed to acquire rights for each song from each
publisher independently. About 10 years ago is when Christian
Copyright Licensing Inc (CCLI) formed as a clearinghouse. Pay a flat
fee, get copyring rights to all of the material from member
publishers. The reasonable fees have probably lead to higher
compliance with copyright law and more income for the publishers and
artists. Mind you, initially, you had to keep track of every song (I
know, I was in charge of doing so for our church). At the time I
handed it over, CCLI had moved to statistical checks where they would
notify you in advance they they wanted you do keep track for a
particular time period. The rest of the time you didn't have to do
anything.

Indeed, with our church I eventually worked out a system where it
would only take a half an hour each week. But ours was a small church
which would use less that 10 songs each week. Doing the same record
keeping in an art shop could easily eat up that much time every day.
Incrementally, half an hour doesn't some like much, but when you are
already very busy it can easily push you over the edge.
