No filter is being used.
I use a penlight with a red LED, it's just enough light to barely see
what I'm writing on paper. It's also only rarely used and this is in
every single frame, regrardless of what I'm attempting to image. It's
in a image of M57, M7, M13, and M51.
Just thought of something..... I don't normally see it because the
mirror flips up but could this be caused by the exposure meter? I think
its red when underexposed.

Are there any kind of red leds in/on the camera. Man, that's a nasty red
blotch. Maybe a reflection from your red flashlight?
