Hi Tom:
I can recommend the Manfrotto/Bogen 3262QR medium ball head. It's beefy
enough for any 35mm or medium format I have hung on it and only about 3
inches high, so it doesn't extend the lever arm too far out. Dual female
thread, so it accepts 1/4-20 as well as that larger size they use on their
tripods. About $40-50 at B&H.
