In one of my other hobbies, I'm a musician, and often have to deal with
taking my instrument (a violin) on planes. Fortunately, it easily fits in
overhead bins. However, cellists for example often have a hard time
flying. One solution is to buy an extra ticket for the cello. I'm not sure 
what the rules on this are, you will probably have to ask the airline.

So maybe you could buy a ticket for your scope? You buy the ticket in the 
name "Celestron Schmidt" or "Schmidt Telescope" :)
