Kind of hard to say since you haven't defined
what you really want to do, i.e., deepsky, planetary,
star trails, etc.  At a minimum, you'll want a mount
that can track.  As for the ETX, it's a nice visual
scope but too slow (operates at an effective f/18) for
anything but the brightest objects such as the moon,
and some planets.

I am new to the astrophotography scene.  I am wondering what kind of
gear is
preferred for ease of use and quality?

I have a 35mm SLR and a very sturdy Bogen tripod....do I also need a
small
telescope or would a long photo lens suffice?  If telescope, how is the
Meade ETX?  The ads place it very well....how bout the people?
