Yes. I wanted to start the 3 f/stop sequence up high so by the time I
reached three stops wider aperture I was not down to the f/2 region. I
don't trust the true f/stop figure when the lens gets that wide open (even
if I was using Nikors).

Yes, for the faster films I had to place the flood lamp further away from
the target.
