You need lots of RAM if you want to avoid spending lots of time with
virtual memory. You need 4 times the image size plus room for the progam
and the operating system. If you're stacking images you need 8 times the
image size. Adds up fast doesn't it? :-)

Set the transparency of the layer to 50% and use the arbritray layer rotation.
My old computer is too slow to use this method but your's is probably fast
enough.
