Kinda funny you mention that.......
This is the very reason why I bought a CCD, the lack of "film friendly
nights". I still shoot film on those "pristine" nights, but according to my
records I took less than 24 "keeper" film exposures in 1997(very poor year)
as opposed to 168 CCD images from May (when I bought the CCD) til the end of
the year. The humidity here in AR is the killer. You can just about forget
film during for most of our summer. With the CCD, all you really need is a
cloudless sky. Even mild moonlight can be dealt with.
With regards to "sharpness and resolution", I had reservations also. I can
only say that I now find CCD images just as satifying as film, but in a
differant way. I can't really put my finger on it, but it's a huge kick to
see galaxies in the background that are'nt even cataloged in "The Sky"
software. :)
