Thanks for the explanation, Dave. But the fringing seems to be of uniform 
size and color orientation all across the negatives. (Except for that weird 
vertical band of reversal in the left 1/3 of the M20/M8 image.)

Jack, your experience is encouraging; thanks! Maybe all I need to do is 
return this unit for another one.

I would still welcome hearing the experience of other HP users to determine 
if my unit is indeed rare in having this apparent misalignment.

If the film is twisted
slightly (right side is stepped a bit more than the left,
for example), I think you would expect to see a vertical
line of no aberration with opposite sides of the line
having reversed color fringing.  The amount of fringing
should increase the farther away you get from the center of
twist.  Is this happening?
