I don't have any other scanner experience so I'm certainly not an expert
with a critical evaluation, BUT the slide work I've done with mine looks
real good to me. It will scan them at 2700 dpi which is a very high
resolution.  
Some of my images on my page were with the HP, check 
http://www.webwide.net/~bobbym/astro1.htm   The jupiter shot and the moon
shot were from slides; M-31, M-42, and M-33 were scanned from negatives.
