Glass mounts are not usually considered archival protection due to, as
you suspected, humidity between the glass. According to the book _The
Life of a Photograph_ (Keefe & Inch, Focal Press) if you project the
images, heat from the projection lamp can actually cause steam to form,
melting the slide to the glass!
On the plus side, If you mount the slides in a dry environment and seal
the edges of the mount with mylar tape, the glass mounts can actually
preserve the slide against fluctuations in humidity.
I think glass mounts are considered the best method for short-term slide
protection, but not for archival storage. Try acid-free plastic for your
slides as well as your photos.
