Matt (and Mike):

What is a "non-HP'd scan"? I just got my HP Photosmart and am 
experimenting. Some annoying things, for example, having to feed the 
negatives "naked" without a casing or protection. And, if you put the neg 
in a slide mount, then it assumes a slide and the color balance is way off 
(doesn't correct for orange case of the negative). Is this what you mean?

Also, it has lots of controls for exposure, but nothing numerical and no 
histograms. Preview seems crude. Any solutions?

I can use any advice you have on how to optimize scans with this scanner.

As of now, I am wondering if I should spring for the Nikon instead (still 
returnable).

While I don't have any negatives to contribute to the cause, I am able to
program the HP Photosmart and get "non-HP'd" scans out of the unit.
