Re: [APML]: 1998 eclipse

I'm sure you'll have a great experience viewing the February eclipse, Derek.
My advice would be to not get so caught up in photography that you don't take
some time to LOOK at the eclipse. Bring a pair of binoculars and take about
the middle minute of totality to see whats so special - the streamers from the
corona and any prominences that are visible.
When you're photographing the eclipse, don't waste many shots on the partial
coverage. Wait until just before totality and catch the first diamond ring.
Then bracket your exposure times to get inner and outer detail. Read the
astronomy magazines - I'm sure there's lots of good tips in articles from the
past couple months. This will be my 3rd total eclipse. I was
off the coast of Mexico for the 1991 eclipse and off the coast of Brazil in
Nov, 1994 for another. Remember, there will be zillions of pictures taken of
this event. Take your own shots, but remember to look at it. No camera can
catch what you can experience visually. Good luck! Mike Mayerchak
