Regarding your image processing survey:
I don't claim to be anywhere near adequately schooled in image processing,
but I get results I am pleased with with four separate programs. I used to
get my imagery via Kodak Photo CD, now Mary gave me a PhotoSmart scanner for
Christmas. The scanner is not quite up to the quality of the Photo CD
scans, but I am not complaining, I like it anyway. I will soon replace the
color images on my web page with new ones produced with it.
For astronomy images I use PhotoShop 3.0 but it is buggy on my machine and
will often crash when converting .PSD or .TIF images to .JPG.
I use Paint Shop Pro to convert .TIFs to .JPGs because of the above problem.
I also use LVIEW for quick general corrections on images but rely on
PhotoShop to do localized dogding and burning. I think LVIEW is the most
underated and overlooked, yet very powerful image processing program out
there for its price range (FREE!!!)
I have also had limited success with the Picture Window popularized by Jerry
Lodriguss. I haven't mastered it, but it has actually improved some images
that I had taken as far as they go in PhotoShop.
