John, Hey, thats exactly how I do it. I need to update my web page on my
schmidt equipment. Looks like another week of clouds here in "sunny"
Arizona! I hate el ninio...

Thanks Chris!
An element of luck was involved in composing, which appears to have
run out judging by the weather. :-( I have an old 6x30 finder and bracket
siliconed to the side of the Schmidt. To align it, I put a piece of paper in
the film holder, with an X marking center of the field. It was then a simple
matter of aligning the finder to Jupiter or Saturn, with the Schmidt image
centered on the X. (you can easily see a planet image inside the Schmidt, on
the piece of paper) After that, the tricky part is visually picturing a 4x6
degree field in the sky! I aimed the finder between M45 and the comet and
aligned the frame N/S and hoped that they would both fit. You can see the
finder at:

As our weather has worsened again, I must pass the Schmidt/Machholz torch on
to you! Good luck with this mission, should you decide to accept it....

John, outstanding image! You just got both of them in, that means you aim
your schmidt quite well. How do you do it?

Chris
