Re: [APML] Sort of OT: New Meade Ritchey-Chretien

Kevin, my sense is that the GPS LX200's have better fork arms and better drives. This new scope
seems to be on the LX200 GPS platform. I think!

As a long-time LX200 owner and (mostly) a lurker on APML, I thought I'd chime in on this subject.
The main problems I've had with using my LX200 (classic) for AP have had to do with the drive and
mount. The declination drive is very poor. Mine is subject to the curse known as "retrograde
motion", in which the dec drive actually drives the scope in the wrong direction for a short time
when reversing direction, which obviously plays hell with autoguider tracking. Otherwise, the
so-called "superwedge" is very springy and the entire OTA bounces around with the slightest breeze.
I have given up on prime focus AP with my LX200 unless the wind is a dead calm. The optics are
great.

I think Meade's RC looks wonderful, but unless and until I hear from others that they have
addressed the drive and mount problems, I certainly am not going to be an "early adopter".

Hi folks,

http://www.meade.com/rcx400

Don't know if anybody's seen this yet or cares, but I thought it looked pretty
interesting...especially since it's an affordable RC design. Thought I'd share since it was
apparently designed for the astrophotographer.

Cheers,
Jason
